Not ‘a’ table, nor ’some’ tables, but The Table was the name of the show that opened last Friday in Boliou Hall (I do not recommend typing ‘table’ that many times in one sentence, as it has a tendency to lose its meaning upon multiple readings). There were, in fact, many tables (eight), of varying size, shape, color, and theme. A lot of time and energy went into these tables, so it was a great release for all of us to see our designs come to fruition. Here is my table:

It’s made entirely out of two 4′x4′ sheets of red oak plywood (bought from Youngblood Lumber in Minneapolis), save for the paint, and a few dowels and screws to ensure its uprightness. I wanted to design a table that was asymmetrical and provided different, unique views depending on one’s location. Despite first appearances, it won’t fall over if you put something on it (just don’t sit on the cantilever). Here are some more images:

Unfortunately, the woodworking class focusing on the table won’t be offered again until Spring 2011 due to scheduling. But I’m very grateful that I was able to take it this term, and for the incredible woodworking studio and resources available in Boliou. I’m sure this won’t be the last of my designs you’ll see coming from woodworking.
