A Dog, A Monarch Butterfly, Metaphor

I’m working on a new series. A comic series, kind of. When something interesting happens to me lately, I’ll draw a few pictures and write a few words about it. They are all true stories. So I call this series A True Story About. The title of each individual work (see this post’s title) is the subject that immediately follows the “About.” Go ahead, click each image for a larger version.

A True Story About A Dog

Still don’t know what happened to that dog.

A True Story About A Monarch Butterfly

This one also has an animal in the title, so I decided to change things up a little for the third.

A True Story About Metaphor

I think it’s a coincidence that these stories all involve animals, but I can’t be too sure yet. All of them are done in “Ultra-Fine” Sharpie (as elaborated here, my new medium of choice) in my sketchbooks. I did the first two in about a half hour each, but spent a little more time on the visual style of the third, which I’m going to try to focus on in the future. I hope to draw many more true stories in the coming weeks.

  1. LOVE the three panels on the bottom half of the metaphor story. I think your style shows through there. mm wow. I’m actually quite impressed. actually.

    • i’m with lisa. the bottom one’s the best. very demetri martin-esque

  2. Was the dog story a few days ago? Cause some guy tried to give a puppy to my sister on the street then later we saw it following someone around downtown. Thus continues this exciting summer in northfield

Also, the metaphor strip is amazing. I love the style.

    • I’m pretty sure it was last Monday (July 27th). This dog was definitely bigger than a puppy, though I don’t know what kind it was. Brown/grayish?

  3. These are Awesome.

  4. And I guess I’m with everyone else here on the metaphor strip. Especially the hand in the relationship panel, and the text throughout (it feels like a mumble in the second panel and then builds into something more resolute in the end).

  5. The metaphor strip feels complete, visually and the text. I’m really psyched to see more!

    Well done.

  6. I love the self-righteous panel in the dog one

  7. I laughed so hard…haven’t read beyond the first one…

  8. very very nice
